In many Austrian cities you can find commemoration signs on important historic buildings witch broach the issue of ancient wars between the Turks and Austria. The content of the signs is about winning wars against the Turks, and they are warning about the danger and fear that comes from them. Negative terms produce prejudice and wrong opinions about foreigners. But now the situation is completely different. A lot of Turks live and work in Austria. The fear should have changed – from fighting each other to respect one another.

The replacement of one commemoration sign with a new is zweintopfs contribution to see foreigners in a different light.

The new text says: „Boxmark - with Turkish support the company daily fabricates leather out of 12.000 cattle coats. The company is known as world‘s 3rd largest producer of leather.“

Its all about signs in public space who should not longer reproduce a historical understanding of migration and conquest, times have changed and our mind should also do.




An historisch wichtigen Bauwerken in Feldbach sind Gedenkschilder montiert


– zumeist handelt es sich um noch existente (bzw. zur Erinnerung an ehemalige) Befestigungsanlagen – an den beiden Stadttoren und am Tabor. Alle diese Tafeln haben einheitliches Design und Wiedererkennungswert.


Inhaltlich ist die Rede von Türkennot, Türkenkriegen, Türkengefahr.
- negative Begriffe, die die Angst vor Fremden schüren


Immer noch – fragt man sich? Und die türkische Bevölkerung in Feldbach heute?


Sind sie die fürchterlichen Eroberer, die sich nach ihrem erfolgreichen Feldzug hier niedergelassen haben und Angst und Schrecken verbreiten?


Auf der Suche nach einem positiven Schild, musste ein neues entworfen werden. Ein Schild das hinweist, das aber auch zu denken gibt – über sich und die anderen Schilder. Dies führte auch zur Suche nach einem positiven Wort, einem Gegensatz.


Es herrscht schon lange keine Türkennot mehr, sondern Türkenhilfe – in vielen Berufen, in vielen Firmen, in verschiedensten Tätigkeiten.
